Shorganics Shenanigans

Vegan Shenanigans

You may not know this, but “Shenanigans” is one of my all-time favorite words. According to Google, Shenanigans means: “secret activity or maneuvering. silly or high-spirited behavior; mischief”

Thanks sounds exactly like what’s been going on at Shorganics. We definitely have some secret, and not-so-secret, stuff happening – and it’s all the shenanigans that have caused me to be delinquent in posting. Apologies, my dears.

You may have noticed we’re working on updating our website! This is very exciting and our new site is SOOOOO much more powerful and more awesome than our last site. Be sure you check it out as soon as it’s up!

The secret stuff is still secret – sorry. It’s the reason we’ve been so busy and so MIA in many respects. We can give you hints…

We hope you’re subscribed to the best vegan beauty box which is delivered to your door monthly!!

and the final hint:

Hint hint - coming soon!

That’s all for now! Namaste

Family Vacation: Vegas Baby! Cirque du Soleil

By Megan Vick

Las Vegas at Night

Las Vegas – there are no words. It has something (lots of things) for just about every person under the sun. When we are not on vacation, we spend a lot of time planning our next Cirque du Soleil show. (True story… Can you be a Cirque groupie? I want to be that when I grow up.) Since my mom and I are dancers by nature (with the training to back it up), we completely geek out over every show. For years, we’ve day dreamed about taking a trip to Vegas just to see Cirque shows. We figured, since we’re going to Vegas – better make it count!

Now, some of you may scoff at the idea of seeing so many Cirque shows due to ticket price – and I will admit that good seats don’t come cheap. However, I know you all know that person who lost $400 at blackjack in 10 minutes. When you consider that you could spend an hour and a half at a Cirque show with some friends for the same price – well… I’ll let you choose your priority.

Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos, because, well, they get REALLY mad at you if you take photos during the performance. So in fear of having my phone taken from me by the clowns of Cirque, I sacrificed having pictures.

The Cirque Shows:

  • KA – MGM Grand
  • Zumanity – New York, New York
  • O – Bellagio
  • Love – The Mirage

KA is an indescribably beautiful show with visuals that make it hard to believe it’s a live show. KA features a moving stage on which the performers dance, battle each other, and spend quite a bit of time flirting with the edge. The story is incredibly strong – the strongest story I’ve seen in a Cirque show – and very easy to follow and enjoy. With wonderful acrobatics, acting, and character development, everyone will love KA for sure.

Zumanity was my personal favorite, but I’ve been antsy to see it since it opened 10 years ago. Zumanity claims to be “The Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil” and they do not disappoint. There are tons of laughs, tons of boobies, and performances for straights, gays, and some fetish people too. While this was my favorite, I don’t recommend for those uncomfortable with swearing, nudity, or anyone who errs on the conservative side. Zumanity was my favorite because at the end – nothing about you matters – it’s all about enjoying life and accepting those around you. A very good message regardless of personal beliefs.

O was a curious show for me. It was the most anticipated because it’s the original “water show.” There was a large pool with a floor that moved over it in different ways and patterns for a visual effect that is unparalleled.  The colors and costuming are incredible, but I found it lacked a solid story to keep my interest. If you go to this show, sit mid-way back and think of it as an array of acrobatic acts that are individual instead of thinking there will be a link throughout the performances.

Love is the show inspired by Beatles music. My parents being HUGE Beatles fans (Mom saw them in concert twice – that’s right… twice!), were giddy with excitement to see Love. While they thoroughly enjoyed it, they both agreed it was similar to O as it lacked a strong story line. The colors and effects were incredible – including an exploding VW Bug.

There is also an entire post dedicate to Criss Angel: BeLIEve. It’s totally worth your time.

Over all, the Cirque du Soleil shows were phenomenal. Mystere was on a one-week vacation for the exact week we visited, so I guess we’ll just have to go back to Vegas again. Oh shucks…

Fun Fact: Mystere is the show Paul Rudd & Seth Rogen see on psychedelic mushrooms in the move, Knocked Up.

Stay tuned for more fun-filled vacation posts, Food Fridays, and other Shorganics Shenanigans.

We’re Back, Baby!

By Megan Vick

While we may have been absent from The South Durham Farmers Market since just before the Christmas holiday, we are returning this Saturday (cue high fives and cheers).

High Five Bunnies

If you didn’t already know, we moved over the holiday and we’ve been taking this time to reorganize and reprioritize Shorganics. Fear not, faithful friends, nothing changes on your end! We’ve simply laid out our office differently and made difficult decisions – like where the printer should go. All in all, it’s been a long process, but we are THRILLED to return to The South Durham Farmers Market – rain or shine – on Saturday.

We’ve missed you, so come on out and pick up some Hand and Foot Creams to soothe your skin in this crazy winter weather we’re having. Namaste

Treatment Tuesday!

By Megan Vick

Welcome to our new series of posts! Treatment Tuesday is designed to help you coordinate Shorganics products into your very own at-home spa treatment. With the cold winter weather getting worse, it’s important to take care of your skin and ensure it’s properly hydrated.  Using products made with organic ingredients help keep your skin pure and free of pesticide residue and other weird synthetic chemicals.

For your body care treatment, you’ll need the oh-so-gentle Lemon Salt Scrub and your choice of either vegan Body Lotion or organic, vegan Body Butter – for the winter, we recommend the Lavender Lemon Body Butter.

Glowing Body Treatment

  1. Hop into the shower (actually, step gingerly – no need to get hurt)
  2. Take a 2 fingers and scoop a bit of salt scrub onto your hand.
  3. Massage scrub all over your body – you’ll notice the salt begin to melt
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 if you need more for your body 🙂
  5. Rinse scrub from your skin (feel free to sing a song while you do this – what’s life without whimsy)
  6. Turn off water (duh) and step out of the shower and pat dry your skin

It’s important you pat down your skin with a towel to dry it instead of rubbing it. By rubbing a towel over your skin, you can actually exacerbate dry and flaky skin. Patting allows your skin to absorb the moisture from the water and removing the excess.

Follow up your drying immediately with a vegan body lotion or vegan body butter of your choice. If you’re using the Lavender Lemon Body Butter, remember a little goes a long, long way.

Enjoy your glowing, rejuvenated skin! Namaste

Friday Feature: South Durham Farmers Market

By Megan Vick

For today’s Feature, I want to shine a spotlight on the South Durham Farmers Market. The SDFM, as it’s affectionately known, is going into its third year. Shorganics joined the SDFM for the 2013 season and we’ve found a wonderful home with them. All the vendors at the market go through a rigid inspection and evaluation period before they are allowed to sell. The Board of Directors for the market, many of whom are farmers and vendors themselves, inspect farms, assess products, and sample food to ensure you are getting the highest quality locally grown food and crafted items.

Whether you’re buying a scone at Ninth Street bakery, naturally-raised meat and eggs from Bull City Farm or Green Button Farm, or some awesome vegan soap from us, you can shop comfortably knowing each vendor is the best of the best. In just 2013, the market grew and changed so much. We are looking forward to more wonderfulness in 2014! I hope to see you soon!

Product Feature: Eucalyptus Tea Tree Soap

By Megan Vick

Eucalyptus Tea Tree is probably our favorite soap at Shorganics. It’s hard to pick just one favorite, but if I had to, it would be Eucalyptus Tea Tree. There is something undeniably fresh and tingly about this combination of essential oils that leaves your body and your mind refreshed and feeling clean. Both eucalyptus and tea tree oils were used by Australian military troops in World War II for treatment of minor wounds on the battlefield. Tea tree oil was so highly desired during this time, tea tree farmers and distillers were exempt from the draft!

Organic Vegan Soap Eucalyptus Tea Tree

The best part about this tingly soap, besides all the organic butters and plant oils, is how the oils don’t overpower you. Both eucalyptus and tea tree can be overpowering individually, but together, in this soap, the scent is pleasant, fresh, and invigorating. Try some today, or check out our 3 pack of soap or 5 pack of soap for an even better value!!

Namaste, y’all!

Product Feature: Cuticle Salve

By Megan Vick

Our cuticle salve started off as a personal mission for us because our cuticles were constantly cracked, dry, and causing painful hangnails. We wanted to make something small enough to fit in a pocket, but packed a big punch when applied. After many, many, many tweaks, our cuticle salve was born. It’s perfect for anyone who works a lot with their hands: artists, jewelry designers, wood crafters, sculptors, gardeners, farmers… you get the idea.

It’s creamier than other cuticle salves so you don’t have to work hard to apply it and it doesn’t leave your fingers feeling greasy. It also has Moroccan Argan oil which provides fantastic nourishment to your nails and cuticles. You’ll love how long a small jar lasts and at only $5.00, they’re perfect to give as gifts!
